This was once a large Moorish city and an active port shipping
citrus fruit overseas via the Arade river. Today little of this
history can be seen apart from the castle and orange groves. The
cathedral has survived from Gothic times and is far more interesting
inside than out, however of the two, the castle is a better place
to visit with its shady gardens. Also of note in Silves is a small
museum with artifacts dating back to the Moorish occupation, and
a monthly market down by the river front.
If you are travelling around the Algarve away from the coast
then since all the roads in this area cross the river at Silves
it is worth stopping for a visit.

- O Cais - 1996
(Rua Jose Estevao, 2 , Tel: 082-445202) This is an even more
typical Portuguese restaurant than 'Marisqueira O Rui' and frequented
mostly by local Portuguese people. On the menu are fish and specialties like coquilhas, amêijoas (clams) or perceves all of which
are good plus piri-piri chicken (chili marinade) and other dishes
such as lamb chops.
- Marisqueira O Rui - 1996
A typical Portuguese restaurant with many fish specialties.
It is always frequented by Portuguese people plus foreigners
who learn about its excellence by word of mouth. One of these
said in 1996 that "although O Cais was very good, Marisqueira
O Rui was twice as good".
