Sagres

This town is famous for two things; it is the name given to a popular and drinkable brand of beer (lager style) and, it has on its outskirts, the fortress and stone compass of Henry the Navigator. It also seems popular with the Portuguese as a place to fish from the very high cliffs.

The remains of the fortress are at present (1995) being 'improved', but in the process a splendid set of museum buildings are being built. Although the exhibits are labelled in Portuguese, they are still worth looking at, which is almost more than can be said for the remains of the famous compass circle. Worth one visit though.

If you are a keen surfer, and going to be in the Sagres area, then the Praia de Casteljo beach on the west coast (some four km northwest of Vila de Bispo) is recommended.

"1996 - This is a one road town, but many culinary delights"!
