Loulé

This town, which is well inland is worth a visit especially for its big open air and covered markets. The open air market is held on Saturday mornings and is similar to other markets in the Algarve. The indoor market, open during the week, is full of stalls aimed at the local inhabitants rather than at the tourist but a number of holders speak good English. This is far more interesting than the many outside markets which are these days aimed at the tourist.

The big problem with Loulé is car parking; it is crowded especially on Saturday mornings. It is possible to visit by coach and save the hassle of parking and many tour operators offer this.

Apart from the two markets there are a number of artisan shops offering leather and copper goods. If you get tired with walking around then the main road has a central reservation containing a tree covered promenade. This has a number of places serving coffee etc. with tables and chairs in both the sun and shade.
