Well worth a walk around, however, its main attraction is the beach.
Parts of the Roman wall can be seen in the town and there is also
a seated statue of Henry the Navigator. The drive along the sea
front (this is the main road) will test your nerves so that a
stop here or at Ponta da Piedade (10
minutes further) may well be necessary. If you have not visited
this place for a while then the new bridge and roundabouts may
come as a real surprise! The church of St. Antonio is said to have a stunning
interior.
For really cheap food with no frills try the area at the back of the Marina
where the fishermen come in.
See also the adjacent areas of Ponta
da Piedade, Alvor and Portimao.
Accommodation (A-Z)
- Few Entries - can you help?
- Don Ana Apartments - 1995
Situated in the West of Lagos, near the Don Ana beach. It offers
self catering accommodation with good facilities.
- O'Linda's Place - 2001
(Aug 2001) "I was in Portugal this past August and stayed at the Hostel
across the street from the HI in Lagos. It doesn't look like a hostel and
there is no real advertisement for the hostel, but it's a really great cheap
place! If you ask at the Old Tavern they should be able to tell you about
it. Marilyn the owner of the Old Tavern is a wonderful lady and I totally
recommend checking the place out. As for the hostel I stayed at there are
two bathrooms per floor, separate keys to enter the building, your floor, and
your room...so it' very safe! O'Linda can be tough sometimes, but it's way
better than the HI right across the street!"
Eateries (A-Z)
- Bahia - 2001
(Aug 2001) "I don't know about in the off-season, but during the summer
months on the beach in Lagos a little eatery called Bahia has live music
every Sunday at 5pm. The place isn't that big so everyone usually spills out
onto the sand. Hours can be spent there eating drinking and listening to
music all while watching the sun set over the ocean. (And for you sporty
types they have there own volleyball net set-up)".
- Barrocca Bar - 1998
"Run by Lev and Rob. Food is European and exquisite
- stir-fry's; home made pate; roast duck; constantly changing
menu with acid jazz/funk music playing permanently. A great welcome
and not to be missed".
- Caravela - 1999
"The head waiter/owner was very pleasant to the six adults AND the six kids under nine. Not a raise eyebrow all
night. The food was great and the specials ( 24 hours notice)
looked fantastic. We were all made to feel very welcome. Couldn't
have asked for a better start to the holiday". Rue Vale
De Burgau, Burgau 8600, Lagos, tel : 69 72 74.
- Dynasty Chinese Restaurant - 2002
(July 2002) "Very quick and over attentive service. some Chinese dishes
did not seem very authentic but a good meal overall. Outdoor terraces with
view over bustling street, Indoor area air conditioned. Approx 12 euros per
person for banquet type meal. Worth a visit for a change but local Portuguese
Restaurants seem better".
- Grand Cafe - 2001
(Aug 2001) "After most of the bars close the place to check out is The
Grand Cafe. Everybody floods in there around 3am. The Cafe is actually an
old home with two stories and lavish furniture. It's the place to see and be
seen, and definitely not to be missed".
- Italia -2002
(July 2002) "Very, very busy Italian Restaurant just off main
square. Lots of regulars. Queue outside for seating during busy periods.
Average Italian food, Average priced. Worth a visit if you like
Italian".
(Mar 2002) "wonderful Italian food".
- Joe's Garage - 1996
"This place is a killer. Its a happening Canadian bar down
by the beach. The people who work there make you roll dice to
take shots. I know it is a popular place for spring break, and
it gets kind of crazy." (In Rua 1de Maio)
- Millennium Jardin - 2002
(July 2002) "Restaurant with adjoining bar area at top of main street.
Waited 20 minutes for table. Usual Portuguese service. Pizza's good but
chicken piri piri lacked 'spice or flavour'. Average priced. Worth a visit
for inexpensive meal but no more".
- Mullen's Bar -1998
"Magnificent - it is like eating in a wine cellar, but the
food is magnificent. The chef - Eddie Mullen - would be on television
if had had stayed in UK".
- Old Tavern - 1996
(Aug 2001) "Marilyn the owner of the Old Tavern is a wonderful lady and
I totally recommend checking the place out. The Old Tavern usually shows
movies at 5pm everyday, and good ones too. You can also get and hamburger
and fries there for 500 escudos (2.5€), which is really cheap. The bar
also has half price or two for one beers and cocktails between 10pm and 12am
almost every night. And if you're from a foreign country check out the
collection of worldwide currency behind the bar, most of it is quite rare."
(1996) "A really good bar run by an English lady situated on the
way into town from the Don Ana area. Beers are just under a pound
a pint, it stays open 'till late and has a good atmosphere".
- Shot's in the Dark - 1996 (No longer in business 2002)
"Run by the same people as Joe's Garage and in the same
road (Rua 1de Maio)".
- Stone's - 1996
"Another bar with a cosy atmosphere and good tunes".
- Venetzia - 2002
(Mar 2002) "A bit more expensive. Huge choice. - Portuguese -very
friendly".
- Whytes Bar - 2001
(Aug 2001) "You can't go to Lagos without hearing about Whytes mostly
because their flyer boys are everywhere! Beyond all of that Whytes is
actually a lot of fun. Check out the bottom floor for dancing, but if
there's no room hey just jump up on one of the tables, they don't mind. The
staff there are awesome, and if you say you're trying to hook up with
someone at the bar they keep feeding you and said person more free drinks to
help get the sparks flying".
- Zanzibar - 1996
A bar owned by Jim (British) and Joelle (French). "Offers
an alternative and eclectic music selection along with superb
cocktails".
