Welcome to my home pages... and a non commercial Holiday Guide to the Algarve. It is not
guaranteed to be definitive or totally accurate but it does contain general
advice and many reviews of Towns, Villages, Hotels, Apartments, Bars and
Restaurants based
on visitor comments.
Many thanks are due to all the visitors to the site
since it started in 1995 many
of whom deserve special thanks for making contributions and for patiently waiting to see their comments
on the web (what's new).
Why not print out a copy of the reviews - Copies are seen regularly in
the Algarve!

The Algarve
The Algarve is an administrative district of Portugal and is
one of the most popular non-Mediterranean package holiday destinations
in Europe. It has a very mild climate, (current
weather) wonderful people and caters
for every taste. Although most people visit during the summer,
it is also popular during the winter season because of its mild
climate and 'out of season' cheap accommodation. If you play golf then the Algarve
has some of Europe's best courses, in fact, if you see any large
green area during the summer, its a golf course!
Note that in 2002 the Portuguese Escudo (PTE) has been replaced by the Euro (
1.00 € = 200.482 Esc.). The official Euro
site contains pictures of notes and coins plus further information.

Tips...
- Top of the list of reviews for the Second third of
2003 - Ohlos
d'Agua followed by Praia da Oura and
"The Strip"
- If you are likely to be any where near "fresh water" (and there
are a lot of farm ponds, tanks, river beds) then take a good quality
mosquito repellent as some are rumoured to be 10cm long!!! Even in larger
towns they can be a real problem especially in the evenings and early
morning.
- Please note that some restaurants do not take credit cards, so if in
doubt always ask as there are no "signs" to this effect.
- Timeshare sellers are active in all major areas - The "Scratchcard"
game where you always win the "Star prize of the day"
is the latest reported scam - Beware!!!
- If you are already in the Algarve and want to find somewhere
to rent then do try the local tourist office. Not only can they
help you but there are often "little old ladies" hanging
around in front of these places who can do you a good deal. This
seems to be an accepted way of renting a room.
- There are high quality and cheaper golf courses in the eastern Algarve.
- Did you know the Algarve sky, away from the coast, is good for astronomy?
- It may seem odd, but very rarely is washing up liquid provided!
- If you need to change money - avoid Banks. The small "Bureaux de
Change" normally give the best rates and no hidden charges!
- When looking at car hire prices make sure that you compare "like for
like". Too often people get a poor deal through not checking what is
and is not included for the displayed price
